SEO is short for “Search engine optimization.” It is a long-term, sustainable marketing strategy that helps you get found online by the people who are looking for the products and services your business offers.

To do this, SEO uses a combination of techniques and tactics to help improve your website’s visibility and organic search results in Google and other major search engines.

The goal of SEO is to attract more quality traffic to your website, which can lead to increased sales and conversions.

It takes time and effort to learn SEO, but it can be well worth it in the long run. With a little patience and dedication, you can start seeing results within a few months.

How does SEO work?

SEO is the process of optimizing a website for Google search with the goal of earning higher web traffic levels and improving the visibility of the site.

The main methods used in SEO are on-page optimization, which refers to factors such as the content, structure, and design of a website, and off-page optimization, which refers to things like link building and social media engagement.

It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to learn SEO basics, depending on how much time you’re able to devote to it. The most important thing is to keep at it and be willing to experiment until you find what works best for your site.

Beginner level SEO techniques

If you’re just getting started with SEO, you need to learn the basics. Here are some beginner level SEO techniques that you can use to improve your website’s visibility and organic traffic:

Use keyword research to find the right keywords to target.

First figure out what keyword is your page optimized for? This can be done by simply copying the text from that page and pasting it into a tool like Wordcounter. (Note: it can check the keyword density of up to 3 word phrases)

If you found your keyword amongst them, then, you have done a good job! Also, I hope the exact match of that keyword also appears in your title and description. If not, then please make the required changes to your title and description to reflect the keyword you want to rank for.

If your targeted keyword either doesn’t appear or does NOT have the highest keyword density, then, you need to optimize the article to ensure your targeted keyword has the highest density.

Optimize your website’s title, meta tags, and content for those keywords.

It is important to optimize your title, meta tags, and content for those keywords as Google is unable to understand the content of your website as we humans do.

That’s right, Google cannot make sense of the sentences like human. It’s a bot Afterall! When Google crawls your page it looks for information that can help it understand what the content is all about. Hence, Google looks at 3-4 key areas to ascertain what is the crux of the content.

You guessed it! There 3-4 areas are: Page Title, Meta Description, Hierarchy Tags (H1-H6) and of course the body (content).

So make sure your targeted keywords appear in those areas. It is absolutely important for them to appear in your title and description. They should also appear on your H-Tags (subheadings) at least once or twice and must have the highest density amongst all other keywords present on that page.

Build links to your website from high-quality websites.

Building links is easier said than done. It really takes a lot of time and effort to build high quality links to your website. There are several approaches to link building, some of which are: Resource Link Building, Broken Link Building, Guest Posting, Forum Posting, Blog Commenting etc.

Here is an article in which I have spoken about these methods in detail. You can ignore the rest of this article and just read up on link building or just read the entire article. It is about building topical authority and frankly it is better to understand what that is while you are learning SEO.

Monitor your website’s SEO progress with Google Analytics or another web analytics tool

This is really important! Consider the Google Analytics as a report card of your performance and efforts. Within analytics (once registered and integrated) you will be presented with a wealth of knowledge regarding your website.

Use it to understand which area needs to be worked upon and where your strength lies. The tool will track almost everything once you have integrated it with your website. You will be able to tell exactly where did your audience come from (social media, referral websites, organic) as well as where is the audience located plus which content is resonating well with the audience and a lot more!

Of course, you need to wait a few weeks after integrating with Google Analytics as it needs some time to accumulate data. So be patient! In fact, if you are really serious about SEO then patience is your new best friend.

Trust me! You will know why I said this in a few weeks…
