Best Practices for Keywords, Content and URL Structure
SEO is the process of optimizing a web page for search engine visibility. There are many things that you can do to improve your chances of being found by potential customers, and SEO is one of the most important.
Use keywords in your content and on your URL. This will help to attract attention from the search engines, which will then lead to more traffic to your site.
Avoid Plagiarism. You should also make sure that your content is well written and relevant to your audience. Plagiarizing content can impact your rankings and in the worst case attract a manual action by Google.
Maintain a good URL structure so that search engines can easily identify and index your pages.
Internally link relevant articles together to add more value to your content.
Maintain a hierarchy in the content by using the appropriate H-Tags. This helps to catch the attention of readers and also helps Google to better understand your article.
Links and Submission Sites
One of the most important aspects of SEO is building links and submitting your website to submission sites. Links are important because they help your website rank higher in search engines.
Links can be built through article writing, guest blogging, and linking to your website from other websites. Submission sites are also a good way to build links. These sites allow you to submit your website for review by other websites. This makes it easier for people who are looking for quality websites to find yours.
To find guest post opportunities without using a 3rd party tool you can use these search strings on Google. Just replace [keyword] with your keyword that you want to find opportunities.
“[keyword]” + “contribute to our site”
“[keyword]” + “guest post”
“[keyword]” + “write for us”
There are several other keyword strings that you can use, if you’re interested I recommend finding them all here
SEO Strategy For Beginners

As a beginner in SEO I recommend you don’t get confused with all that was shared with you above. Here is how you should start optimizing your website –
- Keywords Shortlisting – Focus on building a keyword repository relevant to the article that you’re planning to publish. Use a mixture of relevant keywords with different volumes. Assuming you are planning to publish a lengthy article with multiple subheading use the 30-40-30 formula.
30% High Volume Keywords
40% Mid Volume Keywords
30% Low Volume Keywords
This will ensure you start ranking quicker starting from low volume and move upwards to high volume keywords. - URLs, Title and Description – Ensure your high volume keyword is present in the URL, Title and Meta Description. Although we have a mix of keywords with different volumes, our end goal is to rank for the high volume keyword to drive traffic to the website.
- Optimize all subheadings for Featured Snippets – Under every subheading write short and crisp sentences which are a direct answer to the subheading. Generally, the sentences should be under 40-50 words however, there is no set rule when it comes to featured snippets. You can also have bullet points as the answer to the subheading.
- Maintain Hierarchy – Use the H-Tags (h1-h6) appropriately as it helps Google to build relevance to your article. It also helps the reader to scan through the article and read the part they are most interested in. This is also a vital ranking factor, don’t over look it!
- Internal Linking – There are various benefits of internal linking. It helps driving visitors to various other pages on the website (which may or may not be ranking) by reducing bounce rate, increasing session duration and page views. If you are planning to be a blogger then page views are more important for you than organic clicks.
- Study Search Console Data for Opportunities – Once your article has been indexed and is ranking, use google search console to identify keyword opportunities for either the existing article or new articles. Select the Page and then click Queries to see various other keywords that brough up your article and optimize if you want to.
- Backlinking – I would recommend beginners to focus more on creating high quality valuable content before diving into backlinks. Gaining a backlink from a high DA website is difficult and at times cost ineffective. Rather create content that can gain organic backlinks. Case studies and industry insights will generally attract organic backlinks depending upon the research conducted.
If you still want to create backlinks then go for Blog Commenting, Forum Discussions, Web 2.0 (Medium, Quora etc), Article Submissions, Directory Listings etc. - Desktop & Mobile SEO – Page speed has become a critical ranking factor and optimizing for the same is essential. There are various tools that can help analyze and suggest changes to improve your website speed. These changes are generally image optimizations and java scripts optimization.
By following these 8 steps above you can expect a decent growth in your traffic. I highly recommend you stick to On Page SEO and Technical SEO at the start. By getting traffic on your website you get a bargaining chip (link back) to acquire backlinks from high Domain Authority websites.
